BitDevs Africa is a community built on technical rigor, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to Bitcoin. These guidelines ensure our spaces remain productive and welcoming for everyone.
Our Commitment
BitDevs Africa is a community of Bitcoin developers, researchers, and enthusiasts dedicated to the technical advancement of the Bitcoin protocol across the African continent. We are committed to providing a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for everyone — regardless of background, nationality, gender, or level of technical expertise. Our discussions are grounded in technical merit, intellectual honesty, and mutual respect.
The BitDevs Spirit
Bitcoin Only
Our focus is exclusively on Bitcoin. Discussions about altcoins, shitcoins, or unrelated speculative assets are off-topic and unwelcome.
Technical Rigor
We value depth over hype. Claims should be backed by code, cryptography, or verifiable reasoning — not marketing or social proof.
Open Source
We believe in free and open-source software. Knowledge should be shared freely and discussed openly.
Sovereignty First
We advocate for individual financial sovereignty. Self-custody, permissionless access, and censorship resistance are core values.
Expected Behavior
Be Respectful
Treat all participants with respect. Disagreement is welcome; personal attacks are not.
Stay On Topic
Keep discussions focused on Bitcoin development, protocol, and related technical topics.
Assume Good Faith
Approach other participants with the assumption that they are acting in good faith.
Protect Privacy
Do not share or record what others say without their explicit consent.
Be Constructive
Criticism should be technical and actionable, not dismissive or personal.
No Spam or Shilling
Do not promote projects, tokens, services, or products inappropriately.
Socratic Seminar Rules
Our meetups follow the Socratic Seminar format, adapted from the original BitDevs NYC tradition. The following rules apply to all in-person and virtual meetings:
Chatham House Rule
Discussions within the meeting are confidential by default. Information shared may be used, but the identity of speakers must not be attributed without permission.
No Recording
Video or audio recording of sessions is prohibited unless all participants have explicitly agreed beforehand.
No Screenshots
Screenshotting private conversations or presentations without consent is not allowed.
Questions Over Declarations
The Socratic format encourages questions and exploration, not lectures or sales pitches. Come to learn and discuss, not to broadcast.
Unacceptable Behavior
Harassment
Any form of harassment — verbal, written, physical, or online — will not be tolerated.
Discrimination
Discriminatory jokes or language based on race, gender, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation are strictly prohibited.
Threats or Violence
Any threats of violence or intimidation will result in immediate removal from the community.
Doxxing
Publishing private information about another person without their consent is not allowed.
Scams or Fraud
Any attempt to defraud or deceive community members is grounds for permanent ban.
Reporting & Enforcement
If you experience or witness behavior that violates this Code of Conduct, please report it immediately to the community organizers via our contact page. All reports will be handled with confidentiality and taken seriously. Consequences for violations may include:
Warning
A private written warning with clarification of the violation.
Temporary Suspension
Temporary removal from community spaces.
Permanent Ban
Permanent removal from all BitDevs Africa community channels and events.
